🗺️ MAPGO Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 22, 2026
MAPGO: Heritage on Foot (the "App") is a location-based exploration app: you walk to lift the fog on the map and discover heritage sites. This page explains, in plain words, what information the App stores, where it is stored and who it is shared with. The Korean version is the official version; this English version is provided for convenience.
1. Stored only on your phone
- Your current location (GPS): used only on your phone to find places and lift the fog. Your real-time location is never sent to a server.
- Your routes: to draw today's route on a travel poster, the order of the places you walked is kept on this phone for 7 days and then deleted. It is never sent to a server.
- Photo diary: photos you attach to the calendar are stored only on this phone.
- Settings, outfits, diary entries and other App records are stored on your phone. Clearing the App's data deletes them.
2. Stored on the server when you join a room (family & friends)
When you join a room with its room code and password (or invite QR code), only the following is stored in that room on Google Firebase servers so that people in the same room can see rankings and photos together.
- Name (nickname), character look, titles and badges, points and the number of places found (not which places)
- Photos of artworks and sights (reduced in size) and likes
No location-related information is sent to the server. Your current location (GPS), revealed map (places you passed), places found and when you found them, and your routes are all used and stored only on this phone. So when you change phones, please move them with the 💾 record file in 👤 My.
A room's name is a hashed value made from the room code and password, so nobody without the password or the invite QR code can enter the room. The password itself is not stored anywhere.
Sign-in uses only anonymous sign-in (Firebase Authentication), with no name, email or phone number.
3. Stored when you turn on notifications
If you turn on "📲 Get notifications" in ⚙️ Settings, only the following is stored on the notification server (Cloudflare) in order to send notifications.
- Notification address: a notification-only address and encryption key created by your phone's browser (Google, Apple, etc.). It contains no name, phone number or location.
- Last check-in date and streak: used so that you do not get a check-in reminder on a day you have already checked in.
Turning notifications off deletes this from the server right away. Addresses that can no longer receive notifications (for example, because you turned off notification permission on your phone) are also deleted automatically.
3-1. Stored when you join the national ranking
- Stored only when you tap "Join the national ranking" in 🏆 Ranking.
- Nickname, an automatic number tag (e.g. #3812), your character's face, title, total points and this week's points
- Everyone who uses the App can see this in the ranking, so please use a nickname instead of your real name.
- Location, revealed cells, places visited and photos are not uploaded.
- Tapping "Leave the national ranking" deletes it immediately.
3-2. Usage statistics (totals only)
- In the store app and the public website, the App counts only daily totals to help us improve it. For example: how many people opened the App today, how many started for the first time, how many came back a few days later, the number of devices by type (iPhone, Android, web), and the number of people using a non-Korean language.
- Who opened the App (name or sign-in ID), location and records are not stored with these numbers, so no individual can be identified.
- The date you first started and the date you were last counted are stored only on this phone.
4. External services the App uses
- Google Firebase: storing room records and anonymous sign-in
- Cloudflare: delivering the App's files and the notification server (if notifications are on)
- Your phone's notification service (Google FCM, Apple Push, etc.): notification content is sent encrypted.
- MAPGO map server (mapgo-tiles.exlon8405.workers.dev, Cloudflare): when map images are loaded, connection information (IP address) is passed on. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors · Protomaps.
- OpenStreetMap walking routes (routing.openstreetmap.de): when a recommended course is drawn on the map, only the coordinates of the places are sent. Your location is not sent.
- Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons: "Learn more", artwork preview photos, place photos and short Wikipedia summaries (the App looks up photos by the place's name when you open it; your location is not sent)
- Google Fonts, cdnjs, jsDelivr: connection information is passed on when fonts and App components are loaded.
- Place information is based on the Korea Tourism Organization's TourAPI, Wikipedia and OpenStreetMap.
- The App's font is Maplestory font. The intellectual property rights to the Maplestory font belong to NEXON Korea.
- Korea Dulle Trail courses and routes come from the Korea Tourism Organization's Durunubi. Course progress is calculated on this phone from the cells you walked.
5. What we do not do
- No ads. We do not sell personal information or use it for marketing.
- The App does not access your contacts, your whole photo library or the microphone. The camera is used only when you tap to take a photo or scan an invite QR code.
6. Use by children
The App is made for families to use together. Children should create a room together with a parent or guardian and should not share a room with strangers.
7. Deletion and contact
- Delete in the App: 👤 My → "🗑️ Delete all my records" deletes the records on this phone and your records on the server (records and photos uploaded to rooms, national ranking, notification registration and anonymous account) at once. This cannot be undone.
- Records on your phone: clearing the site data of the App (home-screen app or browser) deletes them.
- If you want records stored in a room deleted, or have any questions, please contact us below.
